It's hard to differentiate between many Japanese restaurants in Hong Kong. The food tastes the same. The decor is the same. They're all over the place. But Shimo. Shimo is something different. Located on the top floor of the recently-built Oliv, opposite Times Square, which unfortunately obstructs the view. The interior is a fusion between modern and traditional Japanese. Beautifully, but simply decorated and at the same time immaculately clean. The restaurant is split into three parts: a Western style dining room, traditional Japanese style private rooms and a sushi bar which extends across the whole restaurant. The restaurant specializes in Shabu Shabu and Hotpot, but I have only visited 6-7 times during lunch and have yet to uncover these delights. The lunch sets, however, are a priceworthy steal. Each lunch set is accompanied by a fresh salad, steamed egg, miso soup and dessert. I went for the Chef Special Set with an Inaniwa Beef Udon and Assorted Sashimi The miso soup and salad were a great start to the meal. Fresh and prepared with just the right balance of flavors and portion. However, the steamed egg was very unique. The restaurant specialises in crab and they combined a crab and celery flavor within the egg. It was very shocking and an unusual combination to the palate at first, but absolutely addicting. Next was the Assorted Sashimi with toro, salmon and yellow tail. All of them were high quality, without any unpleasant fishiness and very fresh to eat. My favorite was the salmon, which melted in my mouth and had an excellent fine texture. The udon was flawless. The beef tender, juicy and chewy. The broth rich, flavorful and aromatic. The noodles chewy, silky and smooth. Although the portion was large, I couldn't stop myself from finishing it. It was wonderful.
And lastly for dessert I had the green tea ice cream. Fresh, with a strong green tea flavour. It was fantastic like the rest of the meal. Address: 15 Sharp St E, Bowrington, Hong Kong Phone: +852 2321 3555
